Sustaining Earth, Our Island Home, is a program offered by Bay Area Episcopal Churches that will help you reduce your carbon footprint and thereby help you reduce climate change. If everyone in the US took 5 actions, we would lower US emissions by 40%. Together we can make a difference. That’s why the Episcopal Diocese of California is now rolling this project out in the Bay Area. Next year they plan to extend it across America. It is free to our neighbors and members as we work to reduce the effect of climate change by empowering people to change the way they live = and to track the impact of their changes. Through this program, you can also see how much of a change everyone in your neighborhood has made together.
Climate change is an imminent threat to both the planet and humanity, and it is arguably the greatest crisis of our generation.
This program represents a way for people of faith and their neighbors to take action by tracking their carbon footprint and reducing their impact on the world. If you have any questions or want to help spread the word, please send an email to Dustin Glasner who is coordinating this program for our congregation.
How does this work?
The Challenge is to reduce your climate change impact as much as possible – choose actions and see how far you can go! Most households can go 70-100% carbon free in 5-10 years and save money in the process. The best news – taking actions can actually improve our quality of life. Through the Sustaining Earth webpage, you can accomplish this in four steps:
- measure your carbon footprint;
- take individual action;
- aggregate impacts by neighborhood group (we are in the NoPA & Anza Vista Neighborhood) and/or congregation; and
- advocate for climate protection.
Join the Sustaining Earth, Our Island Home and help us reduce your carbon footprint – and reduce your contribution to climate change!
What is involved?
By joining the Sustaining Earth, Our Island Home, you can reduce the amount of carbon you and your family put into the environment – a move that can help slow the speed of climate change.
The San Francisco Climate Challenge will empower you to learn how to reduce your climate change impact, save money and help create a safer, healthier future. If you want, it can also link you to others in our neighborhood – the NoPA & Anza Vista Neighborhood – who are also working to reduce their contribution to climate change.
How do I start?
It’s easy to get started: just go to Sustaining Earth, Our Island Home, create a free account and
1) Complete your Energy Profile;
2) Find actions you want to do; and
3) Work Together – join a neighborhood group (our neighborhood group is called NoPA & Anza Vista Neighborhood) and see how we change things.
Help Create a Safer, Healthier Future
Every generation faces challenges. However, some of the challenges that we face today have the potential to impact our children and many generations to come. Increasing emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere are creating a serious threat to our future. Ultimately, the choices we make today as individuals and as a community will determine the world that our children and future generations will inherit. Fortunately, we have solutions available today that are affordable and don’t require us to sacrifice our quality of life.
In order to reduce emissions enough to protect our future, we all need to be part of the solution. The good news – there are actions everyone can take that will make a difference. The better news – most of these actions are easy and will also save money and improve our health. The San Francisco Green Challenge makes it easy and fun to learn what actions you can take and provides helpful tips and resources for those actions. You can also work with your neighbors, sharing ideas and resources, and work together towards goals.
Together we can make a difference! Join the Sustaining Earth, Our Island Home and let’s work together to create a safer, healthier future for our NoPA & Anza Vista Neighborhood.
